A perfect day in Malaga

Actualizado: 5 ene 2021

How to spend a perfect day in Malaga with a self-guided walking tour.

Malaga is just 45 minutes drive from our fabulous beach properties. You can stay with us on the beach and do this wonderful day trip in between days of relaxation and sun. If you are staying in Sunny Corner, Marbella center next to the beach, you can take the easy bus shuttle to Malaga from the Marbella bus station. Coaches leave at least every hour and cost about 6 euros to the bus station in Malaga center. If you are staying in Paradise Beach Elviria, our 3 bedroom with panoramic sea views- you are just a short 45 minute drive from downtown Malaga by car. With our easy underground garage at the apartment, and the instructions below for parking in Malaga your day will be safe and trouble-free! After a day of sightseeing, come back to your beach-side haven and enjoy a cocktail on the Paseo, watching the people go by, or enjoy the sunset on your gorgeous seaview terrace in Paradise Beach.

Malaga is a fantastic city and a fun change of atmosphere from the resort-style town of Marbella. We recommend Malaga trip any day except Sunday. On Sunday, the covered market is closed as are some of the shops restaurants and museums, it's much more festive any other day. We recommend parking at the CAMAS parking lot right next to the covered food market. This parking lot is smack in the middle of the old town and right next to the market. If you get here on a weekday morning it will be busy! Head down to a lower level of the parking garage, -2 or -3, to easily find a free space. The first thing you will want to see is the Atarazanas covered market, with its spectacular stained glass window of a fishing scene. The fish hall is amazing and it's fun to see where the seafood you are eating in the chiringuitos on the beach is coming from! Stroll around the market and let yourself be tempted by some olives, figs, strawberries, nuts... at the far end, out on the street, you will find some little market restaurants that sell fish and vegetables fresh off the market stalls, where you can come back for lunch later in the day. They are open until 4pm but get there sooner as they run out of the best things earlier.

From the market, here is a circuit that will take you past the most famous sites on a self-guided walking tour.

Starting from the Camas parking lot - Atarazanas covered market is a great first stop - Enjoy the old town and have a look in the Iglesia Juan Bautista, see the opulent decor inside. - Walk along the area in front of the Carmen Thyssen art museum, famous for Spanish renaissance paintings - there might be a good temporary exhibit here, the recent impressionist was fantastic... - Continue your stroll through the narrow pedestrian streets filled with tapas bars, specialty food shops, clothing and art... We especially like the nougat makers - delicious - they give free samples! - and little stores selling cones of paper filled with manchego cheese and iberico ham.. Make your way to Calle Larios, a splendid pedestrian avenue where you will find all the main brands of high-street shops, street performers, and spectacular lights at Christmas time.

- From Calle Larios head further into the little streets toward the Picasso Museum, this is a must-see for your one-day experience. They have a very nice audio self-guide program. Lovely building and well laid out exhibit.

- Walk up the hill to the Alcazaba citadel, enjoying the panoramic views over the port, city, bullring, feria..

From the top of the Alcazaba, you can take an uber or taxi back down to the Camas parking lot, or continue on down into town on the north side of the hill - you will be in the area of the Picasso museum and you can stroll through the old town streets again to get back to your car.

If you enjoy the city and want to spend more time here, come back another day to :

- go into the Arab Baths Hammam al Andaluz - hire a bicycle, scooter or segway on the port and ride out along the beach to the chiringuitos north of the city for lunch

- visit the Pompidou museum or other art exhibit that is on during your stay
